What is the RDN YOUth Program all about?

The RDN YOUth program is a community-based solution to the needs of our local youth, offering programs, opportunities and avenues for dialogue in and around our Oceanside area. We strive for positive change, and we believe in:

  • Hearing and respecting youth voice.
  • Supporting and encouraging youth participation in recreation.
  • Responding to the changing interests of youth and community.
  • Encouraging ongoing community conversation focusing on youth recreation.
  • Reducing barriers to participation: cost, transportation and accessibility.
  • Respecting a wide variety of youth interests.
  • Fostering experiences for physical and social wellbeing.
  • Helping youth develop adaptive and positive behaviours that will enable them to meet the demands and challenges of everyday life.
  • Promoting leadership development across the youth network.
  • Working together increases opportunities for youth recreation.

Junior Leader Positions


The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) has a number of summer employment opportunities for junior summer camp leaders in District 69 (Parksville/Qualicum Beach and surrounding areas).

General responsibilities will include assisting with implementing programs; supervising and ensuring the safety of children; leading daily program activities; providing excellent customer service; interacting with parents and community members; maintaining program supplies, equipment and facilities; and other related duties as required.

General qualifications include leadership (paid and/or volunteer) experience working directly with children in recreation and child care settings or other related services. Current first aid (Emergency First Aid or Standard First Aid or Emergency Childcare First Aid) and CPR B or C certifications are required, as well as excellent communication, interpersonal and leadership skills, and a general knowledge of recreation programming and safety issues for children, along with strategies for dealing with children’s behaviours. Please note employment in this position is subject to the receipt of a satisfactory criminal record check (current within 6 months). A completed criminal record check is required to be provided at the time of the interview.

NOTE: All summer employment is dependent upon program registration numbers. Where possible, positions will be combined to maximize number of hours of employment. Preference will be given to students 16 years of age or older to meet swimming pool ratio requirements at summer camps.

Contract positions available:

Junior Leaders:

Working with children (3-13 yrs.) in day camp settings assisting Summer and Recreation Leaders. $12/hr. Variable hours (6hrs-30hrs/wk) up to 9 weeks.
